Who Are We?
The "Sponsor-a-meal Foundation" has been set up solely to provide daily hot meals
to the elderly and impoverished Jews in the Former Soviet Union (FSU). Our goal is
that no Jew should remain hungry and G-d forbid stand the chance of collapsing from
starvation, which has sadly become the case in several cities across the FSU.
The recent economic situation is the FSU has been dreadful; Belarus is suffering the worst socio-economic crisis since the downfall of communism. Prices of food rose by over 140% while the ruble itself was devalued by over 400%. The ensuing socio-economic crisis is still continuing today – and is getting worse. Those who were living on the government pensions and benefits now have much less to spend on food, bringing about a total of 85% decrease in their buying power. Malnutrition is rampant and hundreds of thousands of people are suffering terribly on a daily basis. Due to the rapid inflation many of the shelves in the local supermarkets have been cleared and basic products such as sugar, salt, flour and other food staples are not available. Feeding underprivileged children and supporting
the local soup kitchens and orphanages has become a daily struggle both physically and financially.
Russian and Ukrainian Jewry have been through a lifetime of horrors and sorrow from Nazism to Communism, persecutions and harassments and now an all time increase in the poverty level with no one to turn to. The minimum, which we as compassionate
Jews can do for them, is to support them and help them in their constant struggle to survive.
We at "Sponsor-a-meal Foundation" have been helping unfortunate and desperate Jews in the FSU for the past twelve years, and have now undertaken to help and fund local 'Soup kitchens' in cities across the Former Soviet Union, which include: Pinsk, Minsk, Vitebsk, Orsha, Moghilov, Gomel, Zhitomir, Berditchev, Korosten and Lvov. Hundreds of meals are provided for daily. For the vast majority, this is the one and only hot meal they receive. Indeed, an act of Hatzolat Nefashot (Saving lives)!
